What is Peoplehood?
The Annual Peoplehood Parade & Pageant is a gorgeous, hand-made and people-powered celebration of solidarity, creativity, and courage.
A joyful day of participatory theater, live music, giant puppets, drums, and a city wide parade in West Philly that reminds us of our collective power and the importance of exercising our constitutional first amendment rights.
Peoplehood isn’t just a single day - it’s an art-making and community building process that takes hundreds of artists, activists, families, students and you to create!
What does it take to make Peoplehood?
In the Summer of each year Spiral Q staff begin planning and each Fall Spiral Q opens its studios up to the public for 4-5 weeks of community activation.
It’s a process:
From interest forms to volunteer spreadsheets, Spiral Q spends thousands of hours in planning, coordination, design, development and production in collaboration with the participating communities who also collectively spend thousands of hours collectively transforming ideas and dreams into cardboard puppet and performance realities!
It takes people power:
Spiral Q employees, artists, educators & apprentices
Community Participants & Volunteers
It takes stuff:
Spiral Q crowdsources: cardboard (100%), bamboo (65%), paint (90%)
& Purchases: Fabric (70%), brushes (100%), screens & ink (100%), tools and other supplies (90%)
It takes space:
Spiral Q books shared space with Miguel Antonio Horn in El Cubo’s building whenever we want to host the public. We have a small studio/storage/office space and a larger storage area that we maintain.
AND Spiral Q stores 97% of the art made with and for community
It takes skill & experience:
For 25 years Spiral Q has been evolving with communities of all ages: honing the collaborative design, engineering and production practice, while consulting on narrative and visual strategy for art to be carried and performed in public
Okay, what does that look like? What does it mean? Break it down:
One group’s project took:
100 community/participant hours AND
145 Spiral Q hours to complete from start to finish including, planning, production during two 5-hour builds
